I am a fan of various types of Japanese music (obviously), such as ryuukouka (流行歌) and kayoukyoku (歌謡曲), and have a particularly large collection of Group Sounds (Japanese beat rock).

Although Group Sounds is popularly said to have started in 1965 when the Ventures toured Japan, and indeed the name was given to the nascent genre in that year by Kayama Yuuzou (加山雄三), there are obviously Group Sounds-characteristic traits in music before 1965; 1963 seems like a more reasonable starting date for me.

Group Sounds is largely characterized by highly baroque sunshiney production and extreme label interference.
